To be honest, most children’s television shows are off the air before long. Oftentimes, a show is started to catch in on a fleeting craze, or else the appeal of the concept just isn’t that timeless. Once in awhile, though, we get a show like Sesame Street, The Wiggles (perhaps one of the most popular franchises in Australian toys and television), or Howdy Doody, which winds up hitting upon just the right idea at just the right time, and becoming not just a flash in the pan half hour of daily entertainment, but an integral element of the cultural landscape. As anyone with a daughter, granddaughter, little sister, or niece knows by now, Dora the Explorer is probably going to be one of those shows. Having first aired in 1999, the show has run for nearly a decade by now, and doesn”t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. In 2004 alone, the franchise made $1 billion in revenue from television and toys.

The appeal that Dora the Explorer has for children, and especially young girls, is quite simple. If you want princesses or Beverly Hills party girls, you can take your pick from any number of dolls and TV shows. The glamorous hair and makeup gals are, quite honestly, a dime a dozen. Dora the Explorer has found a tragically unexplored niche in the fact that there really just isn’t much out there for young girls who want some action and adventure in their lives.

Most adventure toys and shows are marketed at boys, but if you think about it, thats kind of silly. Girls love Indiana Jones just as much as boys do. In fact, when the boys toys sword and sorcerer cartoon series He Man and the Masters of the Universe aired, it quickly developed a huge following of young girls, simply because there was so little available for adventuresome girls at the time, and He Man offered plenty of female action heroes to root for.

For some adults, Dora the Explorer brings to mind memories of exploring the parks and forests around our childhood homes. We would turn a stick and an old shoelace into a bow and arrow, imagining ourselves as Errol Flynn or Harrison Ford. As children, we want to explore and imagine ourselves as heroes on some incredible journey. For girls, there is very little on television and in toys to encourage this, and Dora the Explorer is not only a great idea, its long overdue.

Whats more, Dora the Explorer has a well developed cast of wonderful characters, and thats important for any long running children’s show. Dora herself is fearless and capable, the excellent adventure hero, while her sidekick, Boots the monkey, is funny and helpful. Swiper, the masked fox who gets his kicks by swiping peoples treasured keepsakes is generally pretty harmless, providing just enough of a threat to keep kids on the edge of their seats, but not quite enough of a threat to be scary. Displaying Doras heroic character further, shes generally optimistic and kind to all of the other characters, even to the point that she does not hold a grudge against Swiper. Such values are often missing in children’s entertainment.

Its interesting to note that, while Dora the Explorer is typically aimed at a female audience, there are plenty of boys who love the show as well (not that they’d ever admit it to their friends), prompting the producers to launch the spin-off, Go Diego Go, about Dora’s equally adventuresome cousin, Diego, allowing boys to join in the adventure without having to admit that they like a girls show.

Kids in preschool love watching the Dora the Explorer show and watching her friends, Boots, Diego, Swiper, the Fiesta Trio, and her family, Mami, Papi, Abuela and Daisy. The show also features a number of animal characters including, Senor Tucan, Isa the Iguana, Benny the Bull, Big Red Chicken, Baby Jaguar, Tico the Squirrel, and the Grumpy Old Troll. Much of the show is based on following simple clues to find a lost object or to reach a goal, similar to the Blue’s Clues Show also shown with Dora the Explorer on Nickelodeon. Nearly everything in the show is likely to become a living thing, especially Dora’s purple Backpack which can give Dora a seemingly numerous amount of items from inside itself to help her along on her quest.

The show stays well within light hearted realms with the plotlines. You’ll rarely see an episode that can’t be resolved easily with Dora’s persistence and cleverness. Occasionally the character Swiper appears in each episode to take something from Dora and try to keep her from solving her clue and continuing on her quest. However Swiper is relatively harmless, even somewhat loveable which is shown in an episode where Dora helps Swiper when he gets into trouble.

On the show Dora is able to catch flying stars with the aid of Backpack and store them into the star pocket on backpack. The stars are almost always very happy to be put into the star pocket because it is really much larger on the inside than it appears to be. These stars have special powers that Dora can use to help herself get past various obstacles in her path.

There are several episodes of Dora the Explorer where viewers learn a lot about Dora and the characters past. In the episode, Dora’s First Trip, Dora remembers back to when she first met all of the characters. And on, Boots Special Day, it’s learned that Boots actually has two parents and he’s too young to go outside the house by himself.

According to NY Daily News Nick Jr’s Dora the Explorer will be kicking off its upcoming season with a brand new voice-over cast. This is the first time there has been a change since the show started in 2000.

“The motivation was practical more than anything else,” Teri Weiss, senior vice president of production and development for Nickelodeon Preschool TV, told the Daily News. “Our cast has just gotten too old for their parts. We feel lucky that the show has been such a success that we had to find new kids.”

Who is the lucky girl that gets to be Dora? Her name is Caitlin Sanchez. Caitlin is 12 years old and was born in New Jersey.

“When I first found out I was going to be Dora, I couldn’t believe it,” Sanchez, 12, said. “I loved watching ‘Dora’ when I was younger, and my little sister watches it now. She can’t wait to watch the new episodes in September.”

The other changes to the cast will be, Regan Mizrahi as Boots, Alexandria Suarez as Backpack, Jean Carlos Celi as Tico, Matthew Gumley as Benny and Lenique Vincent as Isa.

Weiss doesn’t think audiences will even notice the voice differences.

Season five of “Dora the Explorer” will premiere in the US on Monday, Sept. 15, at 10:30 a.m., with new episodes through Thursday.

On Friday, Nick Jr. will air a five-hour marathon, including all four new episodes as well as “Dora” movies and specials from previous years.

Apart from the new voice cast, the Dora the Explorer shows format will stay the same, apart from the new culturally diverse friends that Dora will be meeting in each new episode. There will be more math problems to solve and Dora will be teching multi word phrases in Spanish.

Dora dvdsDora the Explorer is the Hispanic title character in an animated cartoon for children. Dora made her premiere in 1999 on Nickelodeon, and by the year 2000 her show had become a network staple. In 2005, she became the first Hispanic character balloon to grace the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.Dora is a cheerful, enthusiastic child with a wide circle of friends and a close, loving family. Each episode finds her character embarking on a mission to do a good deed or to help a friend. The mission usually consists of Dora going to three specific locations where she must find things or complete certain tasks. Sometimes Dora requests help from the audience to locate missing objects or to handle a situation. Needless to say, all of her adventures end in success.

At the end of each show, Dora and her supporters celebrate their victory and encourage the people watching the show to think about their favorite part of the day’s adventure.

Dora is usually accompanied by her best friend Boots, a monkey. She is also aided in her quest by her magic purple backpack and her wise geography-savvy singing map. Other minor characters often put in helpful appearances as well.

All heroines, of course, must have an enemy to oppose them. Dora’s rather benign enemy is Swiper, who does his best to swipe the objects Dora needs to find to complete her quest. (hence his name). Swiper is portrayed as more annoying than evil and can sometimes be talked into returning stolen items or even performing a helpful act like rescuing a puppy.

The animation is bright, and the simple plotlines and catchy tunes are designed to delight children (and their parents) while passing along important messages about appreciating different cultures, valuing friends and family, and being willing to work to reach a goal.

Dora is quite popular in with children in the United States. She has also become world famous. Dora the Explorer is broadcast in countries from China to Greece to Spain. There is even a Hebrew version.

Dora the Explorer is frequently seen on merchandise as well. Her face graces backpacks, shirts, jackets, shoes, hats, and jewelry. She is also the star of multiple video games including Backpack Adventure, Super Spies, and Dora the Explorer’s World Adventure and Dora DVDs. Unfortunately, many Dora-themed toys are manufactured in China and were affected by the lead-based paint recall.

Mastermind Toys has a variety of educational toys for babies and toddlers. Provides Dora the Explorer products such as Dora the Explorer Books.
